The sixth wave of infections (you won't see it on TV)
“The sixth wave of Covid-19 in Mexico is combined with influenza and other respiratory viruses. We must continue to wear face masks and follow sanitary measures", announced Dr. Samuel Ponce de León, from UNAM.
According to the same doctor, around October 24th the “sixth wave” of SARS-COV-2 infections in our country, where we will have to deal with seasonal influenza and other health complications.
The expert from the top university reiterated that the use of face masks, hand washing and social distancing continue to be important to stop this new wave of infections from the deadly virus.
In fact, this outbreak was already coming, not only because of the arrival of cold weather but also because of the excessive confidence that we have all had regarding sanitary measures. It has already become common for us to wear a mask around our neck or without covering our nose.
In commercial establishments and large squares the signs of “Access only with face masks” They have remained silent witnesses of the most difficult times of the pandemic. The sanitizing mats look dry, without the liquid that would help clean the shoes.
Containers of antibacterial gel are still in many places, almost as a decorative item, since very few people apply it when entering or leaving public places. However, the fashion of greeting each other with a kiss on the cheek, even with a mask on, has returned and in Catholic religious ceremonies, priests already invite the faithful to “make peace” by shaking hands during the rite.
In health institutions, such as ISSSTE, entry protocols have been greatly relaxed, both in family medicine and in the specialty hospital and other areas. There you can see medical students hugging each other, sharing food and laughing out loud without the necessary protection.
Fortunately, health protocols are still being applied in schools, at least at the time of entry. Sanitizer, application of antibacterial gel and temperature taking are applied daily, although unfortunately, the so-called “first filter at home” is not working.
Parents continue to send their children with symptoms of respiratory illness. “It's like that at dawn, but then it goes away,” “I sent her even though she has a bit of a cold, I don't have anyone to leave her with.”
As I write this column, I am recovering from my second Covid infection, exactly two years after I suffered the first, without vaccines and a general lack of knowledge of how to treat the disease. On this occasion, I am fortunate to have the Paxlovid treatment, the same one that was administered to President Biden when he had the disease.
And I take this opportunity to pay a posthumous tribute to professors Ildefonso Vargas Montiel and Tomás Juárez Cisneros, as well as to Don Andrés Cano Morales, two years after their premature departure, accelerated by the damned virus, which has brought mourning to millions of families in Mexico and around the world.
As always, I read them with pleasure and appreciate your comments on my social networks. Until next time.
