He Instagram success seems to be coming to an end, at least as we know it. Since the boom of TikTok During the pandemic, many other apps have tried to overtake the photo platform or at least relegate it to the background.
«All social networks have a life cycle and it is usually short; examples are Snapchat or Clubhouse. What about Twitter, Facebook or Instagram "It's an anomaly," he says. Ferran Lalueza, professor at the UOC's Faculty of Information and Communication Sciences. Apparently, the new generations are tired of Instagram's algorithm and this platform has more and more competitors.
Among them stands out BeReal, a French app that was launched in 2020, but it was not until early 2022 that it started to gain ground. According to the company, its downloads total 7.67 million and its monthly active users have grown by 3,15%.
Although Lalueza believes that BeReal is not as strong a competitor as TikTok, he stresses that one of the key factors in Instagram's success and longevity is "the number of celebrities that are present there and that make users pay attention to the application because it is a way to get information and meet their idols."
Poparazzi is a photography app that has gained a lot of popularity recently and is presented as a very different option from other similar platforms. Although it has a profile similar to Instagram, only friends can upload images of the person on Poparazzi. This gives it a touch similar to Tuenti, an app that no longer exists and that allowed users to upload practically any type of content without any type of filter.
However, there are some rules on Poparazzi to prevent abuse. You can only upload pictures of people registered on the app, and if someone tries to upload a picture of you without being registered, you will receive an invitation to join the platform. Also, you can only upload pictures of those who are on your friends list. If you want to upload a picture of someone who doesn't have you on their list, that person will receive a notification and will have to accept the post.
Another important aspect of Poparazzi is that users have the option to request the removal of an image from their profile at any time, as well as block other people from uploading photos of them. This helps to avoid awkward or humiliating situations.
But, as is known, when a product works, Instagram copies it or, if not, let's remember the case of Snapchat, an application that carried as its flag the uploading of content that disappeared after 24 hours and that, shortly after, Instagram copied with its storiesBut it didn't end there. With the rise of TikTok and its thirty-second videos, the app Mark Zuckerberg added the concept of reelsIt is therefore not surprising that Instagram now wants to add some BeReal to its umbrella of applications for all types of visual content.
In fact, the reverse engineering expert Alessandro Paluzzi has shared a thread on Twitter showing a fairly similar feature that Instagram is developing and will be called IG Candid Challenges, which works in a fairly familiar way if you've had any contact with BeReal. The user will receive a notification and will have two minutes to publish a photo, without filters. The time will be random each day, precisely to avoid the possibility of preparing the content and thus encourage naturalness, that good that we miss so much on Instagram.
"Meta has not innovated since Facebook; it bought Instagram and WhatsApp, and most of the innovations or new formats that the company has created on its social networks come from other applications," concludes Lalueza.
