Two of the greatest footballers of all time, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are used to breaking records on and off the pitch, but the pair took to Instagram on Saturday night, November 26, the day before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, to post the same photo together.
The two players, who were rivals for years while playing for FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, face off here in an intense game of chess. This is a spectacular photograph taken by Annie Leibovitz for a Louis Vuitton campaign for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where both are participating with their respective national teams in what is their last chance to lead their countries to the top.
We're writing this article on Monday the 28th, two days after the photo was uploaded. Ronaldo's post has accumulated over 35 million likes, while Messi's lagged slightly behind with 28 million.
Cristiano Ronaldo is the most-followed person on Instagram with 500 million followers, surpassed only by the official Instagram account, which has 568 million. Messi, meanwhile, is in third place with 375 million followers, three more than Kylie Jenner.
It's the 125 million-follower difference in Cristiano's favor that has given his post more likes than Messi's. Both have entered the top 10 most-liked photos on the social network, but neither has been able to surpass the record held by the photo of an egg published in January 2019, which has 55 million likes.
