Toe separators: Do they work or is it just another Instagram fad? Istock
Our feet are one of the parts of our body that work the hardest in our daily lives, yet they're often forgotten. And we're not just talking about getting a pedicure, but also about taking care of our footwear and the health of our feet to prevent future ailments such as: bunions, cracked heels, blisters…
The way we use and care for our feet can definitely affect the rest of our body. This concern has led to a new trend on Instagram in recent years, with more and more famous faces, like presenter Cristina Pedroche, following suit.
We are talking about the famous toe corrector or toe separator An increasingly popular practice recommended by physiotherapists and personal trainers, the practice aims to restore toes to their proper shape. But this new trend also raises many questions, one of the main ones being: do they really work, or is it just another Instagram fad?
[Why bunions appear and how to treat them]
One of the reasons our toes suffer on a daily basis has to do with the shape of our shoes, as much of them end in a point or cause the toe area to become partially crushed and compressed.
This type of footwear can lead to long-term foot problems such as bunions, hammer toes, blisters, and so on. Toe separators are used to prevent all these ailments and foot problems.
This specific piece, usually made of silicone, is intended to improve toe alignment and progressively restore strength. On the one hand, it aligns the big toe, while also separating the rest of the toes and strengthening their muscles.
As for whether toe separators really work and whether they make a real, visible change in our feet or if it's just an Instagram fad, the answer is yes. but we make sure to make correct use of this element, something that does not happen most of the time.
It's important to note that the data indicates that most users notice improvement starting in the third or fourth week, but the reality is that real change will only be seen with continued use for at least the first six months, always combined with healthy foot habits and appropriate, roomy footwear.
We must not forget that this is not a short-term miracle. And without healthy foot habits as a sole tool, they won't work. Wearing a toe separator for half an hour a day won't do you any good if you squeeze your feet into narrow, unsuitable footwear for the rest of the day.
In fact, if you really want your feet to improve their shape and strength, You will have to put aside traditional footwear and opt for minimalist footwear with a very wide toe box and a thin sole to stimulate the muscles of the feet.
To see real effects, we recommend that you complement these new foot habits with complementary exercises to strengthen them. You should also take advantage of time at home to walk barefoot and rest your feet. You should start slowly and slowly with toe separators.
30 minutes a day is a good goal to start with, and then increase it as the weeks go by.
