Social media site Instagram is keen to make the experience of users spending time on the platform as good as possible. Therefore, one way to personalise the experience and interact with a specific type of content depends on the likelihood that a person will take action on the post.
There are five valuable interactions within Instagram: spending a few seconds on a post, commenting, liking, sharing it, and clicking on the profile of the account that posted it.
New controls for users
Following people's need for more control over what they see in their feeds on Instagram, the social network is beginning to test new features that will allow users to see what they want in a priority manner.
One of these new controls is applied in the Explore section of the app. Through multiple selection, people will be able to indicate which posts they want to label with a “Not interested” and Instagram will take care of hiding that specific content in the feed and even similar posts in the future.
Another new feature that the social network is about to test is the possibility of notifying Instagram that you do not want to see suggested posts that contain certain hashtags or keywords in the captions. If the user stops seeing a specific type of content, it means that it was included in that type of content.
Other forms of control
Since March 2022, Instagram has implemented a feature that involves including certain accounts, at the user's request, in a category called 'Favorites'. This allows users to access a “second feed” in which only the posts from the accounts selected within the favorites group can be viewed.
To choose which accounts to add to this favorites list, a user must tap the Instagram logo at the top left of the mobile app and add up to 50 accounts belonging to family, friends, creators or businesses. You can also tap the three-dot menu on any post and select “Add to Favorites” directly from the feed.
