Meta Platforms Inc. (FB), formerly known as Facebook, has deleted dozens of pages and accounts on its social networks which were part of a coordinated campaign that originated in Mexico, but also sought to influence parts of Central America and the Caribbean.
The operation included 12 Facebook accounts and 172 pages, as well as 11 Instagram accounts which were removed in December, Meta revealed in a blog post on Thursday.
The accounts posted primarily in Spanish about news and current events in the countries they targeted, which included Honduras, Ecuador, El Salvador, the Dominican Republic and Mexico.
In one case, the network claimed that a political candidate in Honduras had been involved in the Pandora Papers corruption scandal, a claim that has since been debunked, Meta said.
The company connected the operation with a public relations firm in MexicoMeta also took down networks originating in Iran and Türkiye.
