It all started on August 23, 2007, when product designer and Internet consultant Chris Messina arrived at Twitter and suggested that the company start using the hash symbol to group related tweets. Thus, the first hashtag was born: #barcamp. Eleven years later, the social network declared August 23rd International Hashtag Day.
Since then, the use of hashtags has continued to grow, as has their reach and effectiveness, becoming a basic tool not only on Twitter, but on all social networks.
On August 23, 2007, the first hashtag was created on Twitter.
Hootsuite, the leading social media management platform, and We Are Social, noted in their 2021 Digital Report that #love was the most-used hashtag on Instagram posts of all time, used around two billion times. It was followed by #instagood, used on over a billion posts, and #fashion, used over 900 million times.
Something as basic as using the right word accompanied by the pound symbol on any social media platform can not only gain you thousands of followers, but can also be used as a foolproof marketing or advertising tool, or even as a way to raise awareness to support causes.

"It's important to use relevant and specific hashtags, this way your post will be more easily found and seen by more users. Also, don't include too many words together; the best hashtags tend to be relatively short and memorable," explains Romina González Galetto, Regional Manager for Hootsuite in Spain.
To help your post gain visibility and engagement, Hootsuite offers five foolproof tips:
Influencers often offer insight into the current hashtags that are performing best, depending on the industry. You just need to pay attention to the current conversation trends.
Experts point out that it is counterproductive to use a large number of hashtags to seek greater dissemination of messages on social networks.
Reviewing information on the sector that interests you most can also help you identify current trends.
The more specific the hashtag, the easier it will be for other users to find your posts.
Look for any trends in the hashtags being used and be sure to include them in your future posts as well.
Adapt your hashtags to each social network
Although hashtags serve the same purpose, their use varies depending on the channel. You should spend time researching the most relevant hashtags at the moment based on the social network.
