Twitter will prevent its users from posting links to other social networks, as well as sharing their respective names on competing platforms. This was announced by the company owned by Elon Musk, just as half the world was excitedly following the outcome of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar 2022 between Argentina and France, in a move received with considerable discomfort.
“Twitter is where public conversation happens and where people of all walks of life come to promote their businesses, art, ideas, and more,” a statement read. “We know that many of our users may be active on other platforms; however, going forward, Twitter will no longer allow free promotion of other specific social networks.”
In this way, they continue, Any “unpaid promotions” from third-party platforms will be removed, and that includes inserting links to messages without URLs like the classic follow my profile with this @username on some of the banned social networks, which are, for now, the following: Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, Truth Social, Tribal, Post and Nostr. To this list we must add social network link aggregators such as linktr.ee and link.bio.
Links to aggregators such as linktr.ee are also blocked.
Twitter will suspend accounts primarily dedicated to promoting third-party content. “Additionally, any attempt to circumvent link restrictions to these previously prohibited social networks through technical or non-technical means (e.g., URL cloaking, plain text obfuscation) will be viewed as a violation of this policy.”
It seems that, for now, platforms that aren't Twitter's direct competitors, such as artist websites, are exempt from this ban.
This measure comes shortly after the relaunch of the Twitter Blue verification system, which came with several exclusive features and new checks.
