This species, almost 10 millimeters long and whose main characteristic is its bright orange head, metallic blue body and a pair of black spots on the wings, was first described by Georg Wolfgang Franz Panzer in 1798, under the name of Musca Cynophila, which in German was described as Hundefliege ( fly -dog) since it was found on the corpse of a dog.
Another detail that has been given is that the carnivorous flies They are active in winter, since the cold does not seem to affect the larvae that feed on decomposing animal carcasses in the snow.
