He World Cup in Qatar It's unusual in many ways. Not only because it's the first time it's been held in the fall/winter, but also because of the number of fans donning the colors of one country despite being from another located thousands of miles away. These are what have been dubbed "fake" fans, or props, to use theatrical terminology.
The journalist Rodrigo Faez, from ESPN, is covering the World Cup and attended Spain's match against Germany this Sunday. In a video posted on his TikTok channel, he expressed his surprise at "how few people from Spain there are."
In the video, Faez films fans wearing Spanish shirts and carrying flags, but who are actually from Palestine, Canada, Iraq, Kurdistan, India, Bangladesh, Egypt, and Taiwan… until he reaches the last one: a man wearing a white shirt and a shemagh, or Arab headscarf, made from the Spanish flag.
“I'm from Almería, with the tomatoes”, he says with a laugh. His name is José Luna Sánchez and has been posting about her Qatar adventure for a week on TikTok and Instagram. She's managed to take photos with celebrities such as Xavi Hernández, Fernando Hierro, and Santi Cazorla, among others.
