Although they may seem the same, An Instagram reel and a TikTok video have differences with each other and it is important to understand each of these social networks if you are looking to position yourself.
That is why the EXATEC Gerardo Alvarado, founder of the platform “How I Ate”, who has nearly 500k followers on TikTok and Instagram, shared some tips to reach more people and give more exposure to brands.
During the talk “Strategic principles for reels and TikTok at INCmty 2022, Alvarado spoke about 7 elements addressed in the book “Contagious” by Jonah Berg:
An Instagram reel is not the same as a TikTok, since the purpose of the latter is entertain, while the first is for inspire, explained Gerardo Alvarado.
“You have to think from the origin of the platforms: the reel is what's nice, like a photo, and TikTok is for watching stories. A TikTok can be a reel, but a reel can't be a TikTok,” mentioned.
Trigger impression in front of other people through Instagram reels and TikTok videos is a resource that can enhance your brand or content, said the entrepreneur.
“To understand why something is shared you have to understand biological or psychological traits of the consumer: as human beings we share what generates a perception in others.
“More cultured, more intelligent, more traveled. Not bad. It is something common and biologically natural,” he pointed out.
The triggers, explained the entrepreneur, is the resource that will keep the user's attention in the content and on which the rest of the elements will be based.
“'Trigger is to generate identification. Make use of the common external context. For example, the cold. You can also make use of the trending behavior or product. For example, music.”, he mentioned.
Among other tips, the EXATEC of the Marketing career recommended create emotions among consumers and inspire them through knowledge, power or beauty, among others.
“If you want something to be shared, it generates extreme emotion, it really produces a feeling. For example, everything that is true comedy is shared because it is funny.”, said.
People imitate because Others' advice provides insight, that is why the testimonies, unboxing, among other similar content, generate virality, Alvarado said.
“We talk about the psychology of imitation because we are human beings who by nature imitate and do what others do,” Indian.
The more stories we tell on Instagram and TikTok, said the founder of “Cómo Comí”, the more accepted a brand or content will be.

“Personal narratives, experiences and evidence engage people. Novels, for example, are pieces of stories that capture views.”, he mentioned.
For the entrepreneur, Creativity is much more important than production, since it is more relevant to understand the needs and behaviors of the end user's life.
“If you want to create from scratch, look at all the TikTokers and their videos don't look very produced, they look organic. Creativity must be prioritized.
“To create an idea consume content, Understand the origin of your product, situations related to your product or service, what interests and excites”, he noted.
