The Argentine national team became world champion after 36 years, and one figure that didn't go unnoticed during the celebrations was a doll. It's none other than 'Chucky,' the diabolical character from a horror film who became the team's amulet for several months. Learn about the history what is behind it and why he was present on that historic day for the Albiceleste.
After the Argentine national team was crowned World Cup champion, the celebrations erupted in the locker room, and more than one player posted live streams on social media. One of them was Nicolás Otamendi, a defender who specifically captured Chucky, the well-known horror film character, in the midst of the celebrations.
Instagram and other social media users were surprised by the presence of this figure, and many thought it was purely ornamental. Nothing could be further from the truth; the figure has become the Albiceleste's mascot for months and a fixture at training camps.
In an interview with AFA StudyArgentine Football Association (AFA) president Claudio Tapia revealed that before the Copa América, he found the mysterious doll in the props. As soon as he saw it, he considered getting rid of it because it was "cursed" and brought "bad luck."
“I saw the Chucky doll, missing an arm and a leg. No one knew how he was there, amidst all the saints and virgins. I said, 'Who brought that doll here? He's got bad luck.' No one answered.” narrated 'Chiqui' Tapia.
At that moment, the equipment manager Juan Cruz tried to persuade him. "'Boss, that doll brings luck. They call my son Chucky.' As we entered the bubble, he gave it to me so I'd remember him by and always have him with me.", were the words of the property manager, according to Tapia.
After listening to the worker, the AFA president reconsidered his decision and instead made a promise to the seven people who were with him that day.
“I told the seven of them… If we win, we’re going to get a Chucky tattoo,” said.
Days later, on July 10, 2021, Argentina defeated Brazil in the Copa América final and was crowned champion.
The AFA boss got the doll tattooed on one of his legs, as noted in some photographs posted on his Instagram account.
“The seven of us became Chucky. Now he travels with us, he's everywhere. I have one in my house. After this, I bought a Chucky, he sleeps with me.”, Tapia recalled.
As expected, the famous toy accompanied the Argentine delegation during their stay in Qatar, the host city of the 2022 World Cup, and was part of the ritual for the final against France. In the locker room, after the 4-2 penalty shootout victory, the players decided to include him in the celebrations and placed him amidst champagne and beers.
The images went viral on social media, and even Alex Vincent, an American actor who appeared in the first two Chucky films, shared them in one of his Instagram stories.
“Congratulations, Argentina. I see you know how to celebrate.”, was the message he left.
With the World Cup title, Argentina adds its third star, and Chucky will likely remain the star of the South American team, led by Lionel Messi.
