Once again this year, municipal public libraries are preparing to celebrate Christmas in style by decorating their libraries and preparing dozens of special activities to welcome thousands of readers of all ages with one clear objective: to bring the public closer to books and share the pleasure of reading as a family. Thus, the libraries are joining the celebrations with which Madrid City Council celebrates the arrival of Christmas until January 6th, with a program that fills the city with activities and reflects this year's motto, "Your Christmas is in Madrid."
In keeping with the theme of these holidays, the network of 33 municipal libraries distributed throughout the city has organized very Christmassy interest centers in their facilities, giving a prominent, easy-to-find place to publications on this subject and elevating Christmas to a sort of literary genre that encompasses everything from novels to poetry and theater, and especially the short story, which embodies all the magic and spirit of this season. Along these lines, the libraries have also prepared visual and attractive Christmas reading guides that illustrate stories and tales of this genre and are aimed especially at children. They can be consulted at the web of the library network.
Among the range of initiatives these libraries have prepared, a special program of activities especially aimed at children stands out, as they are the undisputed protagonists of the holidays. Highlights include craft and Christmas ornament-making workshops, where the littlest members of the family can unleash their creativity while actively participating in the decoration of their library. Story-writing workshops, Christmas storytelling shows, surprise book loans, and film screenings are also offered.
The Víctor Espinós Music Library, a century-old institution whose mission is to promote the study and love of music, also celebrates the arrival of Christmas with several concerts in addition to a very special activity in which children between the ages of 6 and 10 have the opportunity to learn how to build a musical instrument.
Adults also have their place in the municipal library network. In addition to more traditional activities like the one offered by the Elipa Library, which organizes a guided tour of Madrid's Nativity Scenes, the month of December has begun with the Advent library calendar; a virtual tool that recommends books, movies, and music through social media (Instagram and Facebook) and through which you can vote for the best Christmas center of interest and participate in raffles.
