Hive, the fastest growing social network these days
Elon Musk's mandate over his new toy, Twitter, isn't going down well with everyone. Every day, the billionaire announces a new policy change on his official account, from controversial features like the blue checkmark for payments to controversial decisions like unblocking Donald Trump's account.
[How to download your Twitter data and tweets, “just in case” now that Elon Musk has bought it]
Many people have had enough, and are looking for other apps that cover the same niche as Twitter; the bad news is that, although there are alternatives to Twitter, none of them achieve the same results, even if they try. Perhaps the solution is to switch to an app that does things differently, and that's where Hive comes in.
Despite its youth, Hive has managed to attract many users primarily for two reasons. Unlike Mastodon, it's extremely simple to create an account and start following people. The first time you open the app, it lets you create an account (you can simply log in with your Google account), with your username and the public name you want to be displayed, and you can select your favorite interests, such as sports, technology, or video games, for example.
That's it, you don't have to do anything else. The app will open and immediately show you content related to your interests. Of course, you can follow users and gradually customize your home page, but having content without having to search for it is a great advantage that many apps don't understand.
Hive stands out for its ease of use
The other big reason behind Hive's success is that it's not a simple Twitter copy, but rather a mix of Instagram and Twitter. Photos and multimedia content in general are heavily featured, to the point that we can set music or a video to play when someone visits our user profile. Instagram is another app that has also managed to anger many of its users, so we could say that Hive is the perfect "refuge" for those coming from both services.
Of course, Hive isn't perfect. It's clear that it wasn't prepared for such an influx of users, which came when some popular Twitter users started talking about Hive, to the point where it appeared in Twitter's "trending topics." The official website has also crashed several times, and at the time of writing, it's impossible to log in; the Android app also has several bugs.
Hive allows us to personalize our profile with photos and multimedia content.
Furthermore, it's worth keeping in mind that, despite this, there aren't actually as many people on Hive as on Twitter, even though its growth has been meteoric. In just three days, it's gone from having 40,000 users to a whopping 800,000, which seems like a high number but still falls far short of other alternatives.
And a social network is nothing without users, although at least that can be solved over time. The good news is that in the last few hours, many relatively famous Twitter users and personalities have announced they've created a Hive account, so its future looks optimistic.
