Ordering a fino sherry in Córdoba is definitely no small feat. And that's because It is not the same to be given a glass as to be given half a glass. Although the container or wine glass is the same, the quantity varies.
In fact, a few days ago the foodie José Alberto Pañero, known on Instagram as Juusogastro, I was recording a video from the legendary bar The Churrasco where he explained to the laymen in the matter how to correctly order a fino in Córdoba.
He uploaded it to your Instagram profile and the reel has gone viral and continues to gain views. The creator himself was surprised that In just a few days it has reached 26,000 visits.
“As you know, fino is one of the most widely served wines in Córdoba and its province. A staple in any tavern in the city and one of the distinguishing elements that form part of the Córdoba idiosyncrasy,” he announced to his followers. In just a few seconds, the video reveals the great mystery: “What I'm going to tell you now may seem strange, but it's one of those things that makes Córdoba a unique city. And it's curious that, If you order a “glass of fino” in a tavern, they will fill it halfway, and if you order “a half of fino” they will fill it to the top.And if it overflows, all the better.” And Pañero gives a masterful lesson in the history and culture of wine: “And where’s the trick? The medio is a unit of measurement that was used in the past. It’s nothing more than an abbreviation for half a quart of a liter and is equivalent to filling the entire glass, which would be approximately 125 ml. A 750 ml bottle of fino contains 6 halves of fino. Hence, over time, and due to the economy of language that so characterizes Andalusian speech, this way of ordering wine remained in the Cordoban heritage.”
