Meta CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, laid off 11,000 employees on November 9<\/a>; described the decision as \u201cthe most difficult changes we\u2019ve made in Meta\u2019s history,\u201d in a memo to staff.
This round of layoffs<\/a> This follows similar news from Twitter and Stripe, among other tech companies, earlier this month. Employees at these companies subsequently posted their stories of layoffs, goodbyes, and thank-yous on social platforms like LinkedIn and Twitter.
\u201cIt\u2019s a trend right now, where one person came forward and was brave and said, \u2018Hey, I got laid off,\u2019 and it gave other people more power\u201d to do the same, said Erin McGoff, a career coach who shares advice with her more than 2.5 million followers on TikTok and Instagram. \u201cIt\u2019s wonderful because layoffs shouldn\u2019t be something to be ashamed of. It\u2019s just something that happens.\u201d
McGoff shared the best way to say goodbye after a layoff and how to move forward professionally.
Taking a moment to process the news of a layoff should be the first step, McGoff said. Then, employees should focus on solidifying any professional connections they've made by sending thank-you or goodbye notes, she added.\u00a0
Also, include your personal email, phone number, and LinkedIn profile so they can connect after your work email is no longer active, McGoff said.\u00a0
"Make sure you connect with all of them on LinkedIn because you never know where they're going to go," he said. "Chances are, they won't be at this company forever." 
Trey Maxwell, a former technical contractor for Meta's talent team, was one of the employees who lost his job at the company this week<\/a>After hearing the news, she shared it on social media to find connections and support, and to offer the same to others, she said.\u00a0
"I wanted to be vulnerable, but also take this opportunity to express my gratitude and reflect on the incredible time I had working at Meta," she told Insider. "Personally, it just helps to put it out there and share your story because there may be other people who don't want to post or don't want to be that vulnerable."\u00a0
While LinkedIn can be a place to connect with former coworkers and share news about a layoff<\/a>, is also a place to advertise your skills and what you hope to do next, said Maxwell, who has worked in human resources since 2015.
\u00abLinkedIn is now your resume,<\/a> "It's your professional networking tool and resource," he said. "I want to share my experience with Meta, but I also want to share the kind of person I am and who I will be."\u00a0
It's also important to stay positive, professional, and forward-thinking, McGoff added.\u00a0
Niki Woodall, a former product leadership recruiter at Meta, also posted an ad after losing her job this week. She did so in the hopes of finding a new position and encouraging others to share their stories as well.
Since many positions are filled through connections, it's important for job seekers to actively and transparently share what they're experiencing, he said.\u00a0
Additionally, he liked, commented on, and shared his former coworkers' posts to help them find future opportunities, he said. 
\u201cHelping others on the platform is very helpful, and I plan to share and connect with as many people as I can to help others land jobs in this tough market,\u201d Woodall said.
Layoffs are difficult to experience, but there's nothing to be ashamed of, McGoff said. Instead, "use this as an opportunity to do something you've always wanted to do and then come home and start working," she added.\u00a0
When starting a job search after layoffs, start by gathering your accomplishments, notable metrics, letters from HR, and recommendations that could help you land a future job, she suggested.
Before accepting a new position, take some time to decide what you want your future to look like, McGoff, Maxwell, and Woodall agreed.
"Plant seeds now, tell everyone you know you're looking because opportunities can arise at any time," Woodall said. "The job search is a great opportunity to figure out what's important to you at this stage of life."
